Understanding your role as a medical assistant
As a multi-competent, health care professional involved with tasks ranging from office administration laboratory assistant, the role of the medical assistant is an integral staff member of any professional and smooth running physician's office. Administrative duties may include: answer telephones, schedule appointments, greet patients, update and file patient charts, order supplies, arrange for hospital admission and laboratory services, handle billing, collections, and bookkeeping. Clinical tasks while varying from state to state, may sometimes involve: taking medical histories and recording vital signs, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. Though the role of the medical assistant is a fair amount of patient interaction and is supervised by a physician, it is not to be confused with the responsibilities of a physician's assistant who is capable of examining the patient, diagnosis, and treatment that is directly supervised by a physician.
